FAQ’s

For Residential

  • YES Power doesn't believe in locking customers into contracts! At YES Power we believe in our customer promise, service and rates so much that once you’re a YES Power you won’t want to change.

  • Power companies charge per kilowatt hour (kWh). This calculates the amount of power you’d use per hour in your household, giving you an accurate reading of how much you use per day, and what your power will cost.

YES Power bills itemise out the different components of your bill so you can see how the charges are made up. We aim to be as transparent as possible with no confusing discount structures. Our bills have summary and detailed information so you can easily understand pricing methodology.

  • There are a number of ways you can reduce your power cost. With YES Power’s Flexi-Smart rate the best way is through pushing your power usage into nights or weekends wherever possible.

If you have a smart meter we’re measuring your power usage every 30 minutes. This means that with YES Power you can see when and where you are using high loads, track these back to high use appliances and then we can help you with strategies in using your power to reduce your bills. For example, Hot Water for a new home is typically 46% of your power bill so putting this on a night or controlled rate could save you lots.

YES Power with our partners can arrange a home energy audit to look at where your power is going and what other steps would be most cost effective in getting you a comfortable more energy efficient home.

  • The more information about your consumption you can give us the better, however by simply using the information you provide in our “get a quote”, we can accurately estimate how much kilowatt hour (kWh) you’d use in your household. From this usage, we can work out the cost of your power with YES Power.

Once you’re a YES Power customer, we monitor your usage and optimise plans to make sure that you’re getting the best possible rate for your power consumption.

  • The Network Peak Charge is a charge that comes directly from Orion, and is charged for the use of electricity at peak times during the year (but is passed on at a small daily rate across the year). Thanks to the smart technology that YES Power have invested in, we’re able to accurately determine each of our customers’ Network Peak Charge, which is why we charge this as a separate item on your invoice. Most other power companies just put the Network Peak Charge in among your other rates, as they don’t have the technology to accurately break it down per customer.

  • Your current power company may not break this down for you, or you might not be sure of the times that ‘night’ and ‘weekend’ apply to. YES Power’s Night & Weekend Rate covers 9pm - 7am Monday to Thursday, and 9pm Friday until 7am Monday. This is the cheapest time for you to use your power, with the Night & Weekend Rate being only just under half of your Day Rate!

Through the consumption of our current customers, we have been able to work out that the average household is using 58% of their power during the Night & Weekend times, you are likely over-paying for your power 58% of the time! You can make changes within your household to reduce your monthly power bills by simply pushing your usual day tasks into the nights or weekends. (i.e. you put the dishwasher on after 9pm, washing on weekends and so on)

  • The key difference between a Standard and Low energy user is the average annual consumption. You're considered a Low user if you are consuming under 9,000 kWh per year (for the lower South Island) or under 8,000 kWh per year (for the rest of New Zealand). If you are using more than this, you're considered a Standard user.

The Standard and Low user definitions are mandated by the Government and the Electricity Authority to ensure there are good rates for people who use less power. For more details on this, and other useful information, you can visit the EA website.

At YES Power, we monitor the plan you're on and will advise you if there are better savings for you on a different plan.

  • Your rate may vary at your new property depending on a few different factors such as the regional lines company charges which have different rates in different locations within New Zealand. If you are staying within the same region it’s likely to be the same as your existing property, however to confirm this simply go to www.yespower.co.nz and get a quote or contact our team at 0800 786 744.

We’ll monitor your usage at your new place to make sure we have you on the best rate for your usage, and we’ll keep you updated if there are any changes to your rates.

  • That’s up to you! We have a range of different payment options to best suit your home, so you can pick what works for you. We offer: Direct Debit, Internet Banking and Credit Card.

  • If a planned outage is set to occur and affect your home, either YES Power or the Lines Company in your area will be in touch to let you know.

Unplanned outages can occur unexpectedly, and are usually caused by things out of our control. In these cases we will keep you updated with the outage, and let you know when the power is expected to be back on. Rest assured the Lines Company in your area will be doing everything they can to get the power back up and running as soon as possible.

  • For Orion:

The ‘peak’ time, which is our Day Rate, applies from 7am – 9pm Monday to Friday. The ‘off peak’ time, which is our Night & Weekend Rate, applies from 9pm – 7am Monday to Thursday, and from 9pm Friday to 7am Monday
